The Founders

Dr. Ara Deukmedjian MD, Sun Deukmedjian PA, Arias Deukmedjian and Arianna Deukmedjian founded Deuk Spine Institute in 2004. Dr. Deukmedjian had just completed his neurological surgery residency and fellowship training at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida. Sun completed her physician assistant training at the same time.

Dr. Deukmedjian was recruited to Titusville Florida by Parrish Medical Center to serve the community need for a neurosurgeon. Starting a new practice was a challenge but together they succeeded.

The Deuk Spine Story

2004 — HOW IT STARTED

How It Started

Deuk Spine Institute was founded in 2004 by neurosurgeon Dr. Ara Deukmedjian MD and his wife Sun Deukmedjian PA. The first office opened in Titusville, Florida only 10 minutes' drive from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Dr. Deukmedjian worked as an employee of Parrish Medical Center, performing surgery at the hospital and taking emergency room call. Sun managed the office staff and paid bills. Dr. Deukmedjian quickly earned a reputation for eliminating back and neck pain with the surgeries he performed.

In 2006, Dr. Deukmedjian travelled overseas to learn a new technology developed by South Korean neurosurgeon, Dr. Sang Ho Lee MD. In fact, Dr. Lee used an endoscope to enter the cervical disc from the front of the neck and remove herniated disc fragments using metal pincers called pituitary rongeurs. This procedure would allow a neurosurgeon to treat a herniated disc without removing the entire disc in front of the herniation. It was a brilliant breakthrough. Dr. Ara Deukmedjian brought the endoscopic technology home to Florida and began successfully performing the procedure on patients with cervical disc herniations.
