25 Years of Back Pain Gone: A Firefighter's Recovery Story

This must-watch testimonial features a retired firefighter who lived with debilitating back and leg pain for over 25 years, trying to "tough it out" with OTC medications. His chronic pain forced him to avoid traveling and enjoying physical activities with his wife.

After undergoing the Deuk Laser Disc Repair® (DLDR), he reports that his pain is "gone" the very next day, and, critically, he achieved this life-changing relief without using any narcotic painkillers. He is now making plans to walk all of Europe and train with his son, entering the fire service, proving that the DLDR® has given him back the retirement he deserved.

Transcript:

Dr. Deukmedjian: Morning. I'm Dr. Deukmedjian. I'm here with a patient of mine who is actually a retired firefighter and he injured his back years ago. He's had back problems with back pain for several years. It was affecting your leg as well. We did a Zoom call and here he is. He had the Deuk Laser Disc Repair® performed. How do you feel today?

Patient: I feel good. I feel better than I have in a long time.

Dr. Deukmedjian: Yeah. Can you notice a difference with the surgery?

Patient: I do. I do. Surprisingly quicker than I anticipated.

Dr. Deukmedjian: So, do you still have the same back pain you had before surgery?

Patient: No, it's gone.

Dr. Deukmedjian: No, it's gone.

Patient: Awesome.

Dr. Deukmedjian: And it's not gone because you're taking narcotic painkillers or any type of pain meds because you didn't take the pain meds.

Patient: No, I did not.

Dr. Deukmedjian: So, here you are without the pain?

Patient: Yes.

Dr. Deukmedjian: That puts a smile on your face.

Patient: It does.

Dr. Deukmedjian: How long have you had this pain for?

Patient: Over 25 years.

Dr. Deukmedjian: Wow. 25 years.

Patient: Just tolerated it.

Dr. Deukmedjian: Tolerated it. Tried to tough it out. You're a fireman. You thought, "I'm a tough guy. I'm going to tough it out."

Patient: Yeah. And I got tired of toughing it out.

Dr. Deukmedjian: And we talked a little bit before surgery about how pain causes people to change their lives to avoid the pain coming on. How did that affect you?

Patient: I avoided doing things that I always wanted to do, traveling and more physical activity. You know, I would just avoid doing it because I knew what the end result would be, that I wouldn't be able to do it for a long period of time and it was affecting me in a way that I felt like it would impact my family vacations and I avoided doing certain vacations that I knew would involve more, you know, strenuous activity. And so now I've been retired for a few years, and I want to enjoy those things. Yeah. And so, making plans to do that now in anticipation after that.

Dr. Deukmedjian: I met your lovely wife. She looks like she wants to go. She's planning as we speak, right? And so, you and your back pain that you've had for so long really sort of limited your ability to engage with her and do stuff with her.

Patient: It did.

Dr. Deukmedjian: So, what are you looking forward to doing now that your back pain is gone?

Patient: We have a Mediterranean cruise planned and I plan on walking all of Europe and doing things that I just put off for so long. And then also, my son is entering the fire service too and I look forward to being able to train with him on all the things I did. I want to help him do all those things too and I feel like I'll be able to do that now.

Dr. Deukmedjian: That's amazing. Now where did you serve in the fire service?

Patient: I served on in South Florida Fort Lauderdale area place called Davey and I was there for 30 years.

Dr. Deukmedjian: 30 years. You must have tried other treatments for your back. What did you try that didn't work?

Patient: Mostly, I just I never wanted to take too many things. I pretty much lived off of Advil, Tylenol, Aleve, a regiment of those things and as needed, you know, I never had to do anything but muscle relaxers from time to time. Some chiropractic care, you know, massages and things that were therapeutic that might help temporarily maybe. You know, during the moments and then that would just go away and then I'll come back.

Dr. Deukmedjian: But mostly you avoided activities.

Patient: I did. I avoided activities, you know, after 30 minutes of any sort of a physical activity then the pain would come, and it would last and so I would just stop doing whatever it is I was doing. You know if we were walking somewhere I'd have to frequently stop and sit down, and it was just impacting my life and routine situations and not even strenuous situations just standing for 30 minutes alone. I'd have to sit down because the pain would just come on. I just got tired of it.

Dr. Deukmedjian: So, did you walk 30 minutes this morning?

Patient: I did, actually. She had me walking all the time.

Dr. Deukmedjian: And did the pain come on?

Patient: No.

Dr. Deukmedjian: That's right. Because it's gone. We fixed it. We went in with the laser yesterday. I don't know if you've seen your surgery, but we cleaned up the tear. I got rid of probably 60 or 70% of that herniation, which is all you need, by the way, to allow your disc to heal properly and get rid of your pain. So, that pain will be gone the rest of your life as long as you don't break the rules in the recovery period, which is heavy lifting or contact sports. Anything you want to say to your fans out there?

Patient: I'd encourage anybody who's suffering from these issues to come speak with this man because it'll change your life. Certainly, did mine.

Dr. Deukmedjian: Congratulations. Go enjoy the rest of your life with your lovely wife. And all right, thank you for sharing.

Deuk Laser Disc Repair® (DLDR): No Complications

Deuk Spine Institute's proprietary DLDR® is performed without cutting or damaging healthy muscle, fascia, or bone, without using risky hardware, and without post-operative pain. Unlike traditional spine surgery, there are no complications. None. Best of all, the DLDR® procedure takes less than an hour, and recovery takes less than three days. Our success rate is 99.5%, and we have treated thousands of patients who are now living pain-free. DLDR® is a minimally invasive form of endoscopic spine surgery performed in a modern surgery center under sedation. The procedure uses a precision laser to vaporize herniated tissue through a tiny 4mm incision, preserving all natural disc movement and allowing patients to return to their active lives quickly.
