Step-by-Step Procedure for Radiofrequency Ablation

- Once the target nerve has been confirmed, a heat lesion is created on the nerve using the preferred method (pulsed, conventional, or water cooled radiofrequency) of ablation.
- The process may be repeated for other nerves.
RFA usually takes about thirty to ninety minutes. And patients are usually advised to have someone drive them home after the procedure.

After RFA, the patient is moved to a recovery room for 15 minutes to an hour (occurs when sedation is used), and the patients’ vital signs are continually observed. Depending on the area treated, a superficial burning pain with hypersensitivity that is similar to a sunburn feeling may be experienced. Also, a slight numbness of the skin over the same area may be experienced by the patient.
The following are precautions and tips for the first few days after RFA:
- Using an ice pack: This may be used to numb the pain and reduce any swelling at the injection site. Ice packs should be used intermittently for 15 to 20 minutes at a time with a minimum 2 hour break in between to avoid skin injury. While ice packs are encouraged, heat packs are usually not advised on the injection site after RFA.
- Warm showers: After RFA procedures, warm showers are preferred over baths for the first few days.
