Am I a candidate for laser spine surgery?

When patients come to see me they often ask at the first appointment, “So how will you know if I am a candidate for Deuk Laser Disc Repair®?”  Here’s a list of what we need and look for in making that diagnosis.  Obviously every case is different, but this is a general outline you may find useful.

  1. Physical therapy that has failed to resolve the pain within 6 to eight weeks – Note that you should not wait if there are signs of weakness in the extremities, drop foot, severe pain, or if therapy makes the pain more intense
  2. A high quality MRI not more than six months old
  3. An x-ray that shows flexion and extension
  4. If there has been prior spine surgery, a CT scan
  5. A Nerve Conduction Study and EMG by a quality provider
  6. Failed tests with two properly performed medial branch blocks
  7. Failed durable pain relief with an Epidural Steroid Injection
  8. No presence of Piriformis Syndrome
  9. No evidence of Sacroiliitis
  10. Confirmed discogenic pain as the primary source with or without radiculopathy, principally by discogram
  11. No significant arterial or venous disease causing symptoms

 

Add to this set of tests a detailed health history, including conditions, past surgeries and all medications plus one other very important step – a hands-on physical examination by me.
